Driver downloads and side-loading

Every LCD driver, its current version, and whether the Crestron Home catalogue has caught up:

That page is rebuilt automatically and checked against the Crestron catalogue, so it reflects what is actually available rather than what was true when this page was written.

Two ways to install a driver​

If the driver shows as available on Crestron — install or update it from the Crestron Home Setup app or Configurator in the usual way. Nothing else is needed.

If a newer version is shown on our page than Crestron lists — download the .pkg and side-load it to get the current version straight away.

Why the two can differ

Releasing a driver does not publish it to the Crestron catalogue. We send each release to Crestron and they publish it, so there is a gap between a driver being available from us and appearing in the catalogue. The status page shows both, so you can see which you are getting.

Side-loading a driver​

  1. Download the .pkg for the driver you want from the driver status page.
  2. Connect to the Crestron Home processor over FTP, or use the File Manager tool in Crestron Toolbox.
  3. Copy the .pkg into \User\ThirdPartyDrivers\Import on the processor.
  4. Add the device. The system refreshes automatically and the driver appears under Third Party Devices in the Pair Devices screen.

Replacing a driver that is already installed​

Whether you must clear the old driver out first depends on which SDK it is built on.

To remove and reboot before side-loading a V1 or Ajax driver:

  1. Remove all instances. Press the back arrow on each instance of the driver, in every room it appears in.
  2. Reboot the processor — Setup → All Installer Settings → System Config → Reboot (hold for three seconds), or the console command GRACEFULREBOOT.
  3. Check it has gone. The driver should no longer appear in any room, and UsedThirdPartyDrivers should contain no reference to it. Reboot a second time if any instance remains.
  4. Side-load the new driver using the steps above.
Security-system drivers always need the reboot

A driver whose device type is a security system only registers with Crestron Home across a full reboot, whichever SDK it uses — so a re-import triggers one and the new version does not run until the processor has come back up. This is why Ajax Security is in the second row above.

A side-loaded driver overwrites one with the same identity

Crestron identifies a driver by manufacturer, model name and communication type. Side-loading a driver matching an existing one on all three replaces it.

That is what you want when updating in place. It also means a driver whose model name has changed counts as a different driver: it will not replace the old one, and devices using the old driver keep using it until they are removed and added again.

Each entry shows its version, whether Crestron still lists it, and — where one exists — the newer driver that replaced it. Use the replacement where there is one.

Checking which version is installed​

The driver's version is shown in its details in the Setup app. Worth checking after a side-load, because Crestron Home only offers an update when the incoming version is higher than the installed one. A processor already carrying a newer build will not be offered an older release; remove the driver and add it again instead.
